Yassas and Ahoy, it's raining surprise eggs. Easter is still a long way off. So we start on an early bird mission to Greece! – At the beginning of March we took a plane to Thessaloniki, nose to the wind, saddled up on the bus and went where the water and sun are at their highest. Whether the Erymanthos in the Peloponnese, the Acheron in the blooming coastal region or the Rhodope Creeks in the Bulgarian-Greek border mountains - we spontaneously pick the best levels. Let yourself be surprised!
Geography
Greece is a real treasure chest. A surprise bag of landscapes and microclimates, a land full of water in every season - outside and inside. The Pindos, the mountainous backbone of the country, extends far to the south and is divided into mighty longitudinal valleys from the Ionian coast to the Thessalian Plain. In the northeast, the Rhodopes shield the coast from the much more continental Bulgaria.
Our plane lands in Thessaloniki on March 6th. It's early in the year, really early. Apart from our Greek friends, for whom the whole winter is season, we are one of the first teams to start the paddling year. The small hotels in the hinterland are slowly waking up from hibernation, the wild camps in the river floodplain are even more untouched than usual. Welcome to the Early Bird Mission 2020. Welcome to Greece!
After eight seasons on so many rivers in this beautiful country, we are pleased to present you our Best of March. Let yourself be surprised! We will spend most of the nights in family-run hotels, eat in rustic taverns and cry no tears after the winter with a view of the snow-capped mountains. We plan the river agenda day by day, always keeping an eye on the gauge and weather glass.
