East Tyrol - white water camps at the foot of the Tauern glacier

High in the mountains, the July sun is burning hot, the water is cold and gray! The glacial floods of the Isel frighten the filigree technicians among the paddlers. But hold on, comrades! No reason to lower your head and break through to Soca with blinders on. The Toros crew knows better! In August and September Isel and Drau are a real playboat dream, plus Lieser, Gail and Rienz are just a good hour's drive away. East Tyrol is the perfect late summer area in the Eastern Alps.

Urban playboating! The Drau in Lienz.

Ringing names in the ears of mountaineers, ringing names in the calcified ear canal of paddlers. Großglockner and Großvenediger require courage and perseverance. Isel, Schwarzach and Tauernbach promise adventure and great whitewater fun. What a coincidence that East Tyrol is practically the forecourt of the Balkans. Purely cartographically, of course, and only from the imperfect point of view of the Germans. It is no coincidence that the Toros kayak instructors on Isel and Co. earned their spurs back in the nineties, sometimes even massaging their delicate noses. And indisputable: to appreciate the area. Therefore new in the Toros course program: First cream whitewater at the foot of the Tauern glacier at our alpine camps in East Tyrol.

The crowd on the Isel.

And the glaciers are also the crux of the matter. Thanks to them, the three mighty waterways Isel, Tauernbach and Kalser Bach carry considerable amounts of water until late summer. In East Tyrol you can still paddle in October, when hiking sticks have long been replacing paddles in the classic alpine regions. In June and July, on the other hand, the blue of the glacier melts so violently that - unfortunately not blue, but grinding gray - streams make their way to the valley. Or as one could also say: elsewhere is also nice. In August the water of the Isel clears up slowly and the water levels drop to a dream level. In the lower-lying shores still with taste, in the upper reaches technical, but not scratchy. That's how it should be!

Real gorge feeling on the Rienza. Boofs included.

And best of all: We'll go one better and explore - provided there is enough water - the rivers in the wider area. Whether Gail, Möll and Lieser in nearby Carinthia or the Rienz Gorge in South Tyrol. A large number of really worthwhile stages are easily accessible from the base camp in Ainet.
